Jimmie Johnson’s seventh NASCAR championship puts him on par with Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty

Jimmie Johnson won Sunday’s NASCAR championship in stunning fashion after being held back during pre-race inspection that landed him at the back of the 40-car field at the Miami Speedway.

By lap 126, Johnson had made his way to the top 10, only to be penalized and forced to start in the back of the pack. He made up the deficit after driving through wreckage, putting him back on the lead lap and ultimately, to his seventh NASCAR championship victory.

Dale Earnhardt won seven championships over 14 years, while Richard Petty took home the same number of championship over 15 years. Johnson is now not only tied for the record, but he won the championships in just an 11-year timespan.
