A pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle early Monday morning at the intersection of Sardis and Monroe roads.

The victim was identified as 62-year-old Daniel Wheeler, who was crossing the street away from a crosswalk. The driver, Grigory Kolesnik, 54, claimed an icy windshield was to blame for the crash.

Kolesnik was charged by Charlotte Mecklenburg Police with reckless driving and misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The manager of a nearby McDonalds confirmed the victim was an employee at the restaurant.

WSOC-TV reported Wheeler was a paramedic and a volunteer firefighter.
